November 12, 2018 Dear Parent and Swimmers,
Welcome to the JW Swim Team. We have been anxiously awaiting the start of our ninth season after a very successful season last year. We would like to take this opportunity to provide you with necessary program information along with introducing ourselves and sharing our philosophy with you.
My name is Sue Welsh and I am the Aquatics teacher and pool manager at JW. I have been coaching competitive swimming for 46 years. I am currently the head coach of the Hamilton Y Aquatic Club, a club team I started 36 years ago. I have coached USA Junior & Senior qualifiers, YMCA National and Olympic Trial athletes. Co-coaching the JW swim team is Mr. Knox. Coach Knox is the Physical Education/Health teacher at Littlebrook Elementary School. Coach Knox has numerous years of competitive experience as a coach and swimmer in both YMCA setting as well as High School level. We are both excited to have Amber Rylak return as part of our coaching staff this year. Coach Rylak was an integral part of our staff for the past two seasons, and will continue to work individually with our athletes. Ari Citrin, who coached last year’s PHS varsity swim team, will also be helping out on occasion.
Our practices will begin on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. Swimmers are expected to be on the deck and ready to swim at 7:05 am. We recommend swimmers dress at home in their practice attire, so we can start on time. Practices will conclude at 8:10 am. Swimmers must see Mrs. Welsh if problems arise with the 8:10 am ending time. Swimmers should have goggles, towel, footwear and we highly recommend a competitive swimming suit. The latter is not a requirement. Please send your child with a nutritious snack for after practice.
Personalize team caps with swimmer’s last name will be an option this year when ordering team suits. Two Latex caps with LAST NAME $16.00, two Silicone caps with LAST NAME $28.00. Personalized caps are not required. Latex bathing caps will be provided for the swimmers by the school district. California Beach Hut will be providing team bathing suits and caps. Female suit $63, Male Jammer $41. I have a sizing kit that will help the swimmers determine their size. They can see me before school, on days we are not practicing to try on a suit. To place an order go to: CaliforniaBeachHut.com look for John Witherspoon Middle School. The team suit is new this year, since last year’s suit is discontinued. Orders should be made by November 20.
Please note:swimmers currently swimming on a USA or Y team are only required to come to morning practices on Tuesday, November 20, Tuesday November 27, and Friday, November 30 for time trials. They must also provide the coaching staff with their current best times and check in weekly to receive any updates. As in past years our club swimmers provided strong leadership at our meets. All other swimmers must attend three practices per week in order to participate in our dual meets. Practices held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings 7:10-8:10am.
To access any additional JW Athletics information go to JWMS website. Practice and meet schedule is on the back of this correspondence. Delayed openings and school closings will result in cancellation of morning practice.
We are looking forward to continuing the proper development of your child’s swimming skills. As a team, we will work together emphasizing caring, respect, responsibility, and achieving team and individual goals. This experience should most importantly be fun! Parent volunteers are needed to run our home meets and help withfundraising to support our program. We can’t run a meet without your help! If you are interested in volunteering to oversee the parents, meet assignments and fundraising please email Mrs. Welsh, so I have your contact information.
